Why should you identify your Francophone patients?
Because as a health service provider, you want to meet the needs of your patients. To achieve that, you need to know who you serve.
In order to identify Francophones in your community and collect reliable and standardized data, it is recommended that you ask the following questions:
The second question will include newcomers who do not have French as their mother tongue, but who have knowledge and understanding of French as an official language.

Inclusive Definition of Francophone (IDF)
In 2009, the Ontario government adopted the new inclusive definition of Francophone (IDF). Under this new definition, Francophones are “persons whose mother tongue is French, plus those whose mother tongue is neither French nor English but have a particular knowledge of French as an Official Language and use French at home.”

Central East LHIN has 27 065 Francophones according to the 2016 census. Close to 10,000 live in Scarborough and more than 13,000 live in Durham Region.
70% of Francophones in the Central East LHIN were born in Canada followed by Democratic Republic of Congo (3.2%), Haiti (2.8%) and Mauritius (2.7%).
In a survey, 34% of Francophones in the Central East LHIN (or more than 9,000 individuals) reported having some health limitations.
